My Students

"In fifteen years we'll be teaching programming just like reading and writing...and wondering why we didn't do it sooner." - Mark Zuckerberg As a math teacher I am always looking for ways to tie in math with the world outside of school. Combining Math and coding is a way to prepare our students.

Our students come from all parts of our county.

They represent the county's socioeconomic, ethnic, religious and social groups in one school. We are in a large military community and serve students whose parents serve in the military and who themselves are a part of JROTC. Our school is project-based and we focus on finding ways to engage students through meaningful projects.

My Project

Students will participate in three phases. The first phase, they will use Geometry to design an obstacle course for robots to navigate. They will use their maker skills and develop new ones by building a 4' x 8' wooden arena with a changing game board that is created with the Geometry we are learning. The second phase, students will learn to program and code. After they learn the basics of the coding language they will begin with basic robot commands. The last phase is a competition where students will be tasked to write code to complete the various student-maker obstacle courses.

This project will apply the concepts we are learning in Geometry to a valuable and fast growing skill of coding.

Hopefully, more students will be interested in the STEM fields through this hands-on project where they will build and program robots to navigate and defeat the Geometry Gauntlet.
