Geocaching Geo-literacy

My Students

Geography seems to have lost its significance in this new era of digital communication. People no longer have to explore to see and find new things; a simple click seems to reveal the world's secrets. Why, then, would my students ever need to learn geography?

Although geography is taught at primary, intermediate, and secondary levels of school, the majority of my high school students have very little geographic literacy.

Many of my students come from low income families with little hope of traveling the world. Many of their academic skills are below their actual grade level leaving them with little motivation to pay attention in geography class. Why should they pay attention if they cannot see any practical use for what they are learning in geography?

My Project

Through the use of GPS units, my students will be able to apply their geography skills and knowledge in a way that is fun and that actually applies to their lives. By using the GPS units to geocache to different lessons hidden in caches of all shapes and sizes on the school grounds, the students will not only be engaged in using their new or renewed skills, but they also may discover a hobby worth pursuing outside of school.

While high student engagement is always a goal of mine in the classroom, giving my students practical application with real life scenarios is a high priority as well.

I cannot help but to think about how powerful of a learning experience this activity would be for my students. Not only is it rigorous and applicable to the geography content, but it is also fun. Please help my students rediscover the value of geography while partnering their experience with digital technologies.
