Genre Book Study

Help me give my students some great reading choices for our genre book studies throughout the year!

My Students

My students are a hardworking and fun-loving group that love to read, read, read! My students attend a suburban, public school in the south end of the Salt Lake valley. While I find that many of my students are able to read and comprehend fictional texts, the majority of them struggle with identifying a text's genre as well as the characteristics of particular genres.

In addition to being voracious readers, my students are also very tech savvy and love to create projects that build and develop their technology skills.

They are truly 21st century learners, and they love being part of a classroom community that focuses on using technology skills each day!

My Project

I love to foster my students' love of reading, and one of the best ways I've found to do that is to introduce them to some of my own favorite examples of children's literature in a variety of different genres.

Although many of my students already love reading, I feel they are often hesitant to branch out and try new books and genres without a bit of direction and guidance.

For this reason, I've decided to highlight different fiction genres throughout the year and teach students about the characteristics that make each genre unique and fun. Every six weeks, students will have the chance to learn about a new genre, and I would love to have well-written, high quality books available in my classroom to spotlight for my students!

After learning about a different genre, students will then have the opportunity to self-select books for a genre book study, take a more in-depth look at how their chosen book exemplifies the characteristics of a particular genre through a technology-based report, and create a project that showcases their chosen book to their classmates.
