Genocide & Crimes Against Humanity

My Students

I currently teach Advanced Placement U.S. History, World History, and Human Geography to students at five different high schools throughout the Philadelphia School District. What I like about the classes that I teach and the AP program that I am involved with, is they help to prepare the students for college.

Many of my students have been underserved in their traditional high school classes and so they have been chosen to participate in our district-wide AP program.

These classes are more rigorous and challenging than what many of them are used to but, they all are excited about taking the classes, being better prepared for college, and the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

My Project

For most of my career I have taught about the Holocaust. We would cover the different stages of genocide and how what the Nazis did followed a pattern. I have movies and documentaries about this topic. I have classroom sets of multiple books that we read and discuss.

Then about eight years ago a student asked if there had been any other genocides?

My reply was, "Sadly, yes. There have been many." That is when it dawned on me that I was not doing enough to teach about this important topic. I now go over some brief information pertaining to some of the genocides that have happened over the last century. They then choose one to research and present.

I have been building a classroom library of books for my students to use to assist them with their research and to also provide them with books that they can choose to read as a part of our other independent reading project that is year long. Since this is a topic many of the student know very little about, they are often very interested in learning and reading more. Unfortunately, I only have a few books on these topics and my students usually only use digital and online resources. However, I would like to build up our classroom library and include more books about genocide for them to choose from.
