Genetics Right Before Your Eyes

My high school biology classes need 2 Albino Corn BioKits with extra seeds.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Turner Bull's classroom raised $380

This project is fully funded

I teach high school biology to mostly 9th and 10th grades. However, some juniors and seniors are enrolled in the class as well. A lot of students struggle with the concepts in the class, since most things we work with are not visible to the naked eye. Our classes are mainstreamed with English language learners as well as Special Education students. Activities that include hands-on experiences will benefit ALL students in the class. The concept of "learn by doing" is stressed in my classes.

High school students have a hard time understanding genes and the concept of heredity. Since they can't physically see genes, they can't grasp the concept of how DNA determines your physical traits and why some traits are expressed more than others. This corn experiment will allow them to SEE specific ratios when different organisms are crossed. This will help them understand why both of their parents have brown hair, but they have blond hair.

The activities involved in this project include the students planting seeds from predetermined genetic parents. The seeds are hybrid, meaning both dominant and recessive traits are expressed. Once the students plant and observe the growth of their species, they will physically observe genetic differences and ratios. The seeds use a 3:1 ratio. Meaning for every 3 plants that grow green, one will be albino. Students will then understand how lethal alleles (white plants lack chlorophyll for light absorption and will die due to lack of photosynthesis) remain in gene pools. This is similar to Tay-Sachs and other genetic disorders. Students will be able to see genetic differences in a real organism with 3 weeks.

Your donation will help my students enjoy the study of genetics. Kids love growing plants or animals. All "living" experiments help students relate class concepts to the real world. This hands-on experience will get students excited about genetics!! Thanks for considering my students.
