This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Labs and hands-on activities are the life-blood of biology! One of the most important opportunities we can give is to let our kids experience a lab that scientists are performing right now in labs across the world. Bacterial transformation won a Nobel Prize, and we're doing it with 9th graders!
My school is in one of the largest districts in the state of Texas, and one of the largest districts in the nation.
My school is also considered Title I, meaning that a large percentage of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but one thing a lot of them have in common is that they come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They all also deserve the very best experience we can give them. We have an academy for 9th graders to help them be successful and move on to 10th grade in a timely manner. Research states that if a student fails 9th grade, they have a 50% chance of not graduating. We strive to make our 9th graders successful, and doing things like this lab is one way we keep them interested and involved in freshman-level biology.
My Project
These materials will give our students the opportunity to perform real, hands-on science. This process is currently being done around the world in science laboratories, and our kids get the chance to do this as 9th graders.
These materials give our students the opportunity to learn beyond what the classroom can offer them.
Many of these kids are from low-income homes, and may never get the chance to do a lab like this again. Hurricane Harvey was also a very big, very recent impact on our students, and we want them to enjoy coming to biology and learning with us.
More than half of students from low‑income households
