it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My Students:
ICHS in the Bronx serves a diverse student body, with about 14 languages spoken among our students and staff.
Many are recent immigrants with limited English proficiency. As a para, I witness their incredible diversity and creativity daily. Music can be a powerful tool for self-expression and connection, especially for students navigating new cultural landscapes.
My Project:
Launching an after-school Music Club at ICHS fills the void left by the absence of music classes. Collaborating with ASPIRA, we have access to shared musical equipment, but much of it is in disrepair. Donations for functional guitars, strings, and tuners provide a solid foundation for our club's journey. Students are eager to join, and guitars offer an accessible starting point due to their affordability and portability.
Vision for the Club:
The Music Club will be a space for student-led exploration and collaboration. Free from curricular constraints, students will have the autonomy to pursue their musical interests. I envision cross-club collaborations, such as music video projects with the Yearbook or Photography Clubs. As the club grows, I hope to expand resources, including percussion and electric equipment and songwriting workshops.
Student Impact:
Music education offers numerous benefits, from cognitive development to enhanced creativity and confidence. Through the club, students will learn fundamental music skills, improvisation, recording, and collaboration. Music literacy aligns with our multilingual community values, fostering greater self-esteem and engagement in core classes.
