My students need a working computer to engage beginning readers and to reward/enrich fluent readers with the use of electronic books and Internet reading sites.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you remember life before the Internet? My 6 year old students deserve to dive into the riches computers and the Internet have to offer. These past 3 years I've taught in 3 different classrooms and there have been zero working computers for students.
I have 21 first grade students of all kinds of academic levels.
They are bright eyed, talkative, but great listeners, too. Our school is primarily Latino and of a poor community. I have 2 students with special needs, 5 intensively low students, and 4 very bright students that are reading at second grade level. They all share a common thread: they are all fascinated with electronics and I'd like to tap into this interest by letting all students have a chance to use a computer at school on which they can learn to read or to enrich their reading level and math too, via Internet games appropriate for their level.
My Project
Having a working Laptop in the classroom will immediately serve as a motivator for students who need to learn how to read, those that need to practice their reading, and to inspire a love of reading even as a passtime activity. I will reward students who turn in their weekly homework packet (currently few are completing it) by allowing them extra time at the computer. I will go down the list and have 5 students get to use the computer on a daily basis so that all have a chance to use it once a week. I will train my intensive reading group to use Starfall to help them read in a fun way. Other students will read and interact with Electronic Books such as The Tortoise and the Hare, etc. Others can use the Math resource CDs that our district purchased with our adopted program. I will finally be able to launch videos that directly correlate with our Treasures Reading program which will help students better understand each new unit introduced such as Our Neighborhood, Have Fun, etc.
If our new laptop gets funded, our students will grow in so many necessary ways.
They will learn how to use a keyboard, mouse, navigate through pages on the Internet. Students will go onto second grade charged with confidence in reading, math, and computer use due, in part, to all they will discover and learn in our classroom laptop. There is no going back in technology. Our young learners need and deserve a chance at succeeding in a world where technology rules.
