Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students live in an urban area and have high needs; 98% of families are high poverty. This means that resources for our school are little. But it also means that students experiences outside of school are little; they need hands on experiences in school to help them understand the concepts being taught.

Electricity and electromagnetism are abstract concepts making them very hard for students with little background experiences to comprehend. They need materials to allow them to learn and by doing so their knowledge becomes long term.

The hand powered generator and flashlights will engage students in learning as they "see" that energy can be transferred from their work into other forms (light, heat, sound). This experience will help them connect this learning into understanding electricity in their lives. You will help them take the mystery out of electricity and know that they can understand this abstract concept.

Your help will ensure students use today's technology to understand the science that they are learning. Their learning will be long term, not memorization of terms and facts, but genuine knowledge that relates to their lives.
