My students need Gelli Printing Plates as another tool to learn about printmaking.

My Students
Students visit my art room once every 3 days. 100 K-4 students rotate through my art room every day. In the hour I have them, we introduce concepts, we have some studio time, and we clean up and review. It's a hectic, noisy, jam-packed, messy most days, hands on class. (And it's a lot of fun!).
My school is a neighborhood school with 50+ years of history in the community.
The roughly 300 students who attend have a variety of backgrounds. My students mostly live in the neighborhood surrounding the school, though some commute. As a whole my students are bright, funny, active, and interested in a variety of topics. They are eager to try new things in the art room, and love to get messy.
Our school is a lively place, with many student's parents and grandparents having attended here as well. We have an ELL population, which is primarily Spanish speaking.
My Project
My students are very motivated by printmaking- it's colorful and it's instant gratification. As a teacher, I love to use printmaking. It can be adapted for many lessons and skills, and my students learn the value of following a set of directions- printmaking is just as much about the process as it is about the product. Students apply their color theory by choosing their inks and papers. And, at the end, there is value in looking through the prints, and discussing the successes and failures. Many lifelong learning experiences can be connected to this process.
Gelli Printing Plates will allow me to introduce mono-printing. They are durable, adaptable to a variety of inks and paints, and will be used by most grade levels. By purchasing 6 plates, students can work in small groups. This will encourage students to work with each other, sharing supplies, and helping each other through the process. Mono-Printing will allow us to create both pictures and backgrounds.
Many of my students do not often leave the neighborhood area.
This means that their art class may be their only exposure to the wide variety of tools and materials used to make artworks. Exposing my students to a wide variety of interesting tools and materials will motivate and excite them about learning. It is important for my students to try new things; their experiences are often very limited. Gelli Plates will allow us to expand the way we create and encourage students to keep creating.
