My Project
This project will provide AP Biology students and Anatomy and Physiology students with real world DNA and genetics experiences. With these experiences in gel electrophoresis, students will have a better handle on scientific concepts and be better prepared for science in college and beyond.
Girls from throughout Philadelphia attending Girls' High are aspiring to be the next doctors, research scientists and STEM problem solvers.
Students will do exactly what scientists in research labs, CSI labs and elsewhere do with DNA. This raw experience of working with DNA will give Girls' High students the knowhow to be best prepared for a college lab or a research lab.
By working with micropipettes to measure quantities of substances and then separating DNA, students will get practical experience that are necessary for their STEM futures. By doing labs on bacterial transformation, CRISPR and sickle cell anemia, students will see in real time how DNA knowledge is helpful to solve problems for others and possibly themselves. Helping to fund this will impact students for this year and for many future years at Girls' High.
