My Students

A woman in science is a wonderful and powerful thing. Having the tools needed to achieve her goals in the classroom are just as powerful. I don't want my students to be at a disadvantage because the budget no longer allots money for classroom supplies.

We are one of four all-girl public schools in New York City with students ranging from 6th to 12th grades.

These girls come from low income areas where the high school graduation rates are on a decline. Our goal is to empower these young ladies by providing them with a strong education and to help them realize that college is more than just a dream, it is their future. My students are motivated and dedicated young women. They love to be engaged in science and exploratory activities. I want to give them every advantage that I can to do so.

My Project

A woman in science is a wonderful and powerful thing. Having the tools needed to achieve her goals in the classroom are just as powerful. I am requesting supplies that the students and I will use to make our lessons more engaging and creative. The dry erase markers, erasers, the stapler, rubber bands, markers, highlighters, and glue sticks will be used to create innovative projects and execute experiments. The Clorox disinfecting wipes, broom, dust pan, and drawer organizers are to clean up after we finish our experiments and projects. A clean and organized room makes it easier to navigate around our room and to quickly find supplies when we need them so we can spend most of our time engaged. The Flip Camcorder is to record our experiments and projects so that they can be uploaded to our class website. The cable is to connect the computer to the projector so that we can view and share our projects and the speakers make it much easier for the whole class to hear our projects.

My students are part of an all girls 6-12 school in urban New York.

Many of these girls are forced to grow up quicker than they should due to stigmas and/or family obligations. They will see many of their friends incarcerated, become pregnant and drop out of school, or worse. For many of them, education will be their only escape from a world full of poverty and crime. Our school demonstrates to these girls that, yes, they can achieve and exceed even their own expectations!
