My students need materials to support the guided math model that we have started. We need two sturdy shelves on which to store materials. They also need fun, colorful counters as well as 10-sided dice.
As students in a school marked as high poverty, my students face many challenges to learning both in the classroom and at home. Despite these challenges, my students love to learn. They are eager learners and seek to meet the challenges I place before them daily. While they work hard everyday to meet the rigorous goals of first grade, they also challenge me. They are an active group that has challenged me to adapt my teaching style to the methods through which they best learn.
My Project
Whole group instruction can rarely keep the attention of my students for more than a few moments. They are an active group that learns best in small group situations. We are now using both guided reading and guided math models as the primary instructional method to teach and learn.
Switching to a guided math model has proved to be extremely effective for this group, but also very time consuming and costly.
We need two sturdy shelves. We now need space to store the centers and activities that I have purchased and/or made. They also need fun, colorful counters as well as 10-sided dice. We also need a few additional manipulatives for our centers. These materials will help students be able to visualize and practice the math concepts that I am teaching.
