Gator Makers: Exploring Robotics and Engineering

Help me give my students LEGO Robotics resources to enrich their STEM experiences.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Hack's classroom raised $3,534

My Students

Students in Gator Makers are part of a pilot program aiming to provide third, fourth, and fifth grade students from varying backgrounds with hands-on, authentic, and collaborative experiences in computer science and engineering in order to combat the learning loss seen from the lack of authentic scientific exposure in the last two years.

The students that join this club are eager, creative, and capable leaders that are seeking the resources to make their ideas come to life.

My Project

I am requesting LEGO Robotics resources to enrich their STEM experiences. Gator Makers is a fourth and fifth grade STEM and robotics program at our elementary school (home of the Gators!) that aims to provide students with engaging robotics activities both during and after school. The current program is in its inaugural year, and is seeking the STEM resources in this grant to increase student engagement due to lack of resources.

The program aims to provide engaging science experiences to students of varying backgrounds using LEGO SPIKE Prime robotics kits so we can work with students to:

1. Target learning loss in science by providing engaging practices related to state science standards

2. Explore the engineering design process by fostering creativity and using critical thinking skills to collaborate and construct student creations

3. Build trust, teamwork, and collaboration skills that foster strong relationships in working towards a common goal through problem based learning experiences

4. Foster problem solving, collaborative, and competitive skills in local and statewide First LEGO League competitions.

5. Provide students with authentic practices of key scientific process standards as outlined by the Indiana Department of Education.

The versatility of the LEGO SPIKE Prime robotics kit will allow me the ability to implement these materials in a variety of ways to provide differentiated instruction for science. The versatility of the kits also provides me with the ability to use the materials in different classroom settings: small group, one to one and whole class.
