Gardens So Students Can Grow

My students need supplies to plant and care for a school garden, which will help urban students connect with nature, and tie in to both reading and science units.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children growing up in a crowded city environment have very limited opportunities to connect with nature. I want to give them the experience of raising plants from seed to table.

Our sunny Southern California location is perfect for growing plants year-round.

My bright, energetic 2nd and 3rd grade students are eager to get started! In 2nd grade students should learn the life cycle of plants, as well as how environment effects growth. 3rd graders are supposed to learn how the structure of a plant lets us know about it's function. In addition, both grades have stories in their reading series that deal with seeds, plants, and vegetables. What better way for these kids to learn these concepts than by growing a variety of plants?

My Project

Only steps outside our classroom door are four empty raised bed gardens, just waiting for my wonderful 2nd and 3rd grade students to dig in and bring forth life. With these much needed supplies my students will be able add nutrient rich soil, plant a variety of vegetables and flowers, and spend time outside caring for their garden. In addition they will be able to test soil nutrient and moisture levels to help them better understand what their plants need to thrive.

By caring for a garden, and learning what plants need to stay healthy, children also learn to respect and care for nature.

This will lead to healthier lives for them, and hopefully a healthier world for us all.
