My Project
How cool would it be to grow your own food without dirt on your porch or in your laundry room? The majority of our district participates in the free and reduced lunch program with many relying on the local food pantry for help to make it to the end of the month. Fresh produce is a luxury at the pantry, and our town is essentially a food desert with the closest grocer 10 miles away and the only food for purchase locally is at a convenience store or the Dollar General. Another fact we are concerned about is the overall health and obesity rate of our students due to the low nutrient density food items readily available.
Our plan is to introduce the Carolina Hydroponics Kit starting in the 8th grade Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources class in an attempt to not only "wet their appetite" for Ag Science classes, but also provide a hands on opportunity to learn how to add fresh food to their diet with minimal cost, space, and resources.
Once established, we will push the curriculum and project down through the middle and elementary school via the science classes.
Our students, like most, are hungry for actual project based learning and this project would combine elements of Agriculture, STEM, budgeting, and health to name a few. Thank you for bringing this project to fruition for our students!
