This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students need the experiences and excitement from learning about healthy eating, planting seeds, growing those plants, and eating what they have grown.

My students are a group of hard-working second graders who love to learn.

We are one of five second-grade classrooms in a Title I school with just under 500 students. It has often been said that our school is hidden and as such it can be difficult to locate. For this reason among others, we do not receive additional support to fund classroom needs unless the teachers seek the funds or materials.

My Project

My classroom has two EarthBoxes and our school recently begun planting in two raised beds. My students clamor to be more involved in the process of planting, observing the growth, and learning how they can grow their own food. I am trying to do that for this year with them, but with only two EarthBoxes they cannot plant more than one or two plants each. I would like to vary their plants from beans and radishes and add different herbs, vegetables, and other possibilities. The growing stands will allow the students to observe and take care of the plants without stooping. This can also save my back as I assist them. The different seeds will help offset my personal costs when purchasing seeds for the students. We plant bean seeds due to growing easy, germinating and harvesting quickly, and most students love them. However, I don't have the bean germination set to show them how the bean plants germinate underground.
