Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager, enthusiastic young artists. They come into the art studio willing to learn, take risks, and explore their creative potential. Through our time together, I have had the opportunity to know them as individuals. Many have come up through hardships in their childhood that are more than anyone should experience in a lifetime - yet, they persevere. A large portion of my school's demographic receives free lunch and other services. When they enter the art room, they find a space that is welcoming and supportive. We use many of our projects to reinforce learning through their academic courses and to support STEAM in our school. My students want to be positive members of society, want to participate in problem-solving, and want to find success in their academic endeavors. My students' eagerness for learning surpasses expectations. I take honor in my role as their art teacher. I hope to inspire, motivate, and open their ideas to creative endeavors.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting an indoor greenhouse, seeds, and gardening supplies. This project will have many levels of potential, including a collaboration between the art class and many of the academic courses, including the living environment. We discuss how biologists use close observation to create wonder, hypothesis, and learn about different species. Students understand the similarities of skill sets between scientists and artists. Youngsters will experience the satisfaction and patience of growing flowers and veggies. I believe that this greenhouse project will excite students to the joy of learning, make cross curricular connections and inspire new and original artwork based on the growth! We plan on growing some herbs, mints, and tea flowers so we will be able to enjoy tea time and use our garden items in food.

Students will use teamwork and work together to create moments for limitless art inspiration from watching the plants grow.

They will enjoy tea time with the tea and herbs, as well as, see the ease and importance of the ability to grow food.

As we begin to come out of the pandemic, we must remember the need to be self-sufficient. Additionally, it is important for kiddos to feel the satisfaction and pride in the hobby of gardening. As city kids, many do not have opportunities to enjoy dirt and feel the Earth in their hands. The potting soil and seed starter mix are both rich, soft dirt that is full on nutrients for our variety plants.

It is pleasurable to use- soft, dark and smells of nature and potential. The seed selections are plants that will be enjoyed in growing food. Students will have to learn how to work in a group and team for a common goal.
