This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Fresh veggies & fresh fruit! Fresh flowers! Many of our students aren't exposed to radishes & cucumbers, or know the difference between Xenias & Marigolds! But with this garden project, this is the end product of our gardens when our 4th graders grow & maintain their garden outside our classrooms.
We are very rural school in Texas with 500 students.
Our topography consists of very rocky soil, and sometimes difficult to grow at their own homes. A large percentage of our kids have never had the opportunity to grow their own garden, but by learning these skills they are prepared to start one on their own. Our 4th grade curriculum consists of understanding how organisms undergo similar life processes and help them survive within the environment.
My Project
At our school we have some garden beds from funded by a previous grant. Every year, the kids clean them out, cultivate the soil, learn about the weeds & and native creatures to the soil. They water, plant, prune, and maintain their garden daily. Once fruits & vegetables harvest, they are allowed to cut & wash them, and eat right there, or take home and share the glory with their family. As for the flowers, we wrap up them up and cut for a beautiful homemade Mother's Day gift. The culminating activity to this all....we share the garden with the whole school at Academic fair Night in may.
Nothing is more exciting than watching the kids as they see their plants grow and harvest them.
Not only are they learning the life cycle of plants, but they they are learning how to potentially sustain their family with food and flowers at home. They are learning how to take care of something from start to finish and work together as a group by sharing a space, and watering for their classmate when they may be absent.
