Help me give my students the opportunity to grow their own Hawaiian plants which they are currently learning about in Social Studies!

My Project

These fourth grade students are still feeling the effects of COVID-19. There are pockets of knowledge that they seem to be missing. Information retention has been difficult in the typical classroom setting so their knowledge gain has been slow. Hands-on learning has been helping students remember content in different areas. Social studies in grade 4 is Hawaiian Studies. Students have not yet experienced hands-on lessons about the sustainable practice of ancient Hawaiians in Hawaiian Studies. These supplies will give me the tools to teach them about the ancient Hawaiian sustainable practice of growing their own food through hands-on learning. My plan is to place students into groups of 3 or 4 and have them plant ʻuala, or Hawaiian sweet potato in the potato bags that I have requested. The purple flowering plant is pretty but the peek-a-boo appeal with the potatoes as they grow in the bags that I requested will keep them interested and engaged. We will take notes about the growth that they observe. The raised garden boxes on wheels will make it easy for students to stand and tend to other Hawaiian plants such as taro which will grow well in those boxes in the full sun. The special soil that I requested is essential for retaining water in our dry, hot environment.
