This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In the "Garden of Empathy" project, students explore empathy by caring for plants, drawing parallels to human needs. Tending to the garden fosters responsibility and empathy, highlighting the importance of compassion and support for both plants and people. Discussions on fresh herb and produce scarcity deepen understanding of the challenges so many of our communities face. Donating harvested herbs and produce to our student's families provides firsthand experience of impact, enhancing empathetic understanding.

In my class, we have learned about food waste and how many people go hungry, while many of us just throw food away, so this experience will show students that growing the food takes effort and that we shouldn't take it for granted.

Students will address community needs by growing and donating herbs and produce, learning their actions can alleviate hunger and improve living conditions right in our own backyards. The project emphasizes the impact of small gestures in fostering compassion.

Success is measured through kindness journals, class discussions, herb and produce quality, and recipient feedback. These assessments gauge students' compassion development and the project's impact. Help us as we embark on this beautiful journey mixing our Math and Science curriculum with our project goals.
