it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching math to sixth graders can be a challenge, especially to all girls! Math gets a bad name, but my mission is for my students to learn to appreciate math.
My school is part of a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in under-served communities for success in college and in life.
In this part of Texas, I teach about 80 girls who are on their path to college. Ninety percent of them are from low-income households, but they don't let that barrier interfere with their dream. They have curiosity, integrity, self-respect, and a great amount of persistence!
My Project
At this age it is very important to be able to visualize what's going on mathematically. The real world is their life day in and day out. Having gardening equipment would help the girls understand area and perimeter to a higher level. They would understand the "why" behind having to know how to compute these concepts. Not only would they be learning their math skills in a fun way, they would also be able to feel like they are making a difference in the environment around them.
The girls will carry the responsibility for taking care of their mini-gardens, which in turn, will provide confidence in them being able to successfully grow a garden. Once the growing process has begun in their mini-gardens, the girls will transfer their flowers to the area around our campus. Seeing their creations everyday will remind the girls of the math they learned and fun they had during the lesson.
