I teach in an inner-city high school in the heart of one of Chicago's most controversial neighborhoods. Our school is located in the middle of fifteen different gang territories, which causes a lot of friction between our students. Many of our students feel that there is no way to avoid joining a gang, and those who remain strong face challenges of violence every day.
I have been working with my students to show them the horrors of gang violence and trying to find a way for them to avoid some of it. One of the best ways I've found is to have them read books by former gang members about the brutal truths of gang membership and that there is a way to get out. I am looking to create an "anti-gang library" of books for my students to read during class that will show them another way besides gangs.
