Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine what it would be like to move to a new country where you didn't even know the language let alone the culture, the rules, and other people!!! I am working with several groups of ESL students who are in the grueling process of assimilating to the United States as teenagers.

I am the school librarian at this giant high school in California and I have partnered with one of the ESL teachers to help her expose her students to peer-friendly conversational experiences.

Every other week she brings her students to the library to engage in a conversation with fluent English speaking peers. Each student is in a small group facilitated by another teen who speaks English fluently. The intimate circle can talk about anything they wish as long as the conversation stays in English. It is our hope that by practicing their English with another teen, they will develop daily oral language skills and adjust to the U.S.A. with relative comfort and grace.

My Project

However, the conversations, I have noticed and my teen facilitators have told me, feel a little forced and disengaging. Many of the students don't even want to talk. Therefore, it is my hope that if I were to provide games, the students might be more inspired to speak. Friendly competition is a profound motivator!

I hope you are as interested as I am in helping these youngsters adjust to our country.

Their future is dependent on whether they learn English. It is excruciatingly difficult to be successful in any country if one doesn't know the language. I want to give these students all the tools for success so they can achieve their future goals in our country. Please help me accomplish my goal of helping them reach theirs!
