Libraries have long been seen as quiet sanctuaries dedicated to reading and research, but they are evolving into dynamic community centers that cater to diverse interests, including gaming.
For teenagers, playing games in the library can be a crucial part of their development.
First, it fosters social interaction, develops teamwork skills and builds friendship without a screen. Second, playing games can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Many games require strategic planning, decision-making, and adaptability, skills that are transferable to academic pursuits and real-life challenges. Third, integrating games into library activities can make libraries more appealing to teenagers, who might otherwise view them as outdated or solely academic spaces.
My students keep this library hopping. From 6:45am to 2:45pm students use the library to do homework, work on projects, socialize or just find some quiet time. Our school has students from all over our county from different cultures, communities and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is an incredibly special place that really unites a large diverse community of students. The library can often be a place where students find new friends and a place, they feel safe and welcome.
This year I want to broaden our reach in our school community. I want more students to find the library and decide it's a place they want to be. while games are already a part of our culture, our Student Library Advisory Committee is hosting UNO tournaments this year for our students and staff. These tournaments will allow students and teachers to play with people they may not know, to develop relationships in new ways between student and teacher and possibly build more empathy for those around us.
