This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Gifted Learning Center includes students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. We have 75 students and 4 teachers in the Center. Students attend the Center from all over the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Our students are highly gifted and are able to progress in all academics at an accelerated pace and rigor.
Our students are extremely creative and they love to solve problems.
Most of the day in the Center is spent with multi-aged peers, reading, writing, and doing math and science. Students are in charge of their learning and are also given many chances to make their own educational decisions. We also have a Genius Hour when students get to choose what they want to learn.
My Project
Because I know my students are totally into video games, I want them to know how the games are made. Bloxels are the perfect entry point to learn with a physical and digital aspect that will reach all of the ages represented in the Center.
Just like Google, 20% of our time in the classroom, students get to explore their passions.
Bloxels will reach a large number of students by bridging the gap between writing and STEAM. Students with a passion for coding are given a creative way to further their coding skills while being able to develop their storytelling and writing skills. Gifted students often struggle with creative writing. My goal for my students is that by creating video games, the story element will carry over to their writing. It will add a STEAM aspect to characterization, plot, and other story elements. Those students who want to learn to program will find that they can put their creative talents into a visual and hands-on technology-based medium through gamification.
Bloxels is full of problem-solving, technology and fun all rolled into one!
