This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kindergarten students are full of excitement for school. For most of them, this is their first school experience. Additionally, many of my students are English Language Learners, where English is their second language. Students are eager to learn the language as well as all other skills.
My students are an eager and motivated group of children.
Everything about kindergarten is new and exciting, including the language. Since many children have not been in a preschool setting, teaching social and language skills are closely tied together. My students need these opportunities to build these important social skills in a small group setting.
My Project
Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Zingo and Boggle are wonderful childhood games that many children enjoy. These games are fun and engaging for the children to use during center time. But the most important thing about these games is that they will provide teachable moments to build social skills like taking turns, sharing materials and working together. Since my students have never been in school before, these are skills that we teach in kindergarten and what better way to build upon these skills with these games. Students can work together to play games while learning fundamental social skills. Additionally, students will be exposed to vocabulary and word building skills. All this can be gained and built upon with these amazing games.
These games will play a major role in community building in our classroom.
Giving students a platform to learn how to work together can set the tone for the rest of their school career.
