Diversity? Mobility? Exceptional families? That's our school. Our students are almost all military dependents, and our school specializes in meeting their needs. They arrive, and they leave, throughout the year, moving from, or to, places across the country and even around the world. Some have gaps in their learning from multiple moves, and 1 in 5 have some kind of disability requiring special services.
Our school has a mindset that all students benefit from the strategic use of available resources, as we develop ways to meet their unique needs.
Classroom teachers and special education support staff cooperate to provide a continuum of services to students based on academic, social, and emotional needs instead of labels. We also teach character and life skills to support children who deal with stressful lives, as well as integrating those with special needs across our school community.
We place great emphasis on ensuring our students achieve the skills, motivation, curiosity, and resilience to succeed. Our families are proud to serve our country, and we are proud to educate their children.
My Project
Many of my students have difficulty with attention in the classroom, whether they are working independently, in a small group of peers, or engaging in classroom discussion. Research shows that eye-hand coordination can influence attention and learning.
Games like pétanque, Molkky, and disc golf develop eye-hand coordination along with team social skills, building community and improving our aim toward learning goals while we throw toward game targets!
In pétanque, students toss or roll a ball toward a smaller target ball. They aim to be closest to the target. In Molkky, students toss a cylindrical block toward numbered pins, similar to bowling pins. Because the block is cylindrical instead of spherical, they need to attend to and differentiate their aiming strategy. Disc golf requires yet another throwing technique as students aim their disc toward a basket target.
These three games each require different throwing skills, but all of them teach students to monitor and adjust their eye-hand coordination to develop accurate aim at a target. In addition, they are played in small teams. Students will practice the social-emotional skills we have learned in order to support team success.
I plan to set up these games outside so students can play them in small group rotations. These new options for playful learning will significantly improve our PE time, while also improving attention and learning skills.
