My students and their families are amazing! Many have given up everything they knew--friends, extended family, church family, jobs--in hopes of living in a safer location. Others are here temporarily for career opportunities and to better their English skills. No matter the situation, all are here in our small town looking to improve their lives. But, it can get lonely being the only family who speaks your native language.
The goal of this project is for our schools´ ESL program to create more opportunities for connection for these students and their families and to provide authentic opportunities to speak English during the summer months at family game nights.
The students (and parents!) will not only improve their basic interpersonal communication skills, but they will also learn and use the language of each game as they play for fun. We plan to host these game nights at school playgrounds and public parks throughout our district.
