This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to complete a project without the proper tools? While the curriculum and books for programming the Xbox are free, the actual hardware isn't. We need a Xbox with Kinect in order to test our programs.

We are in a large urban school district in north Texas.

Our students are at high risk of dropping out, come from low income homes with a high percentage of free and reduced lunch services. We are currently struggling to maintain our Acceptable Yearly Progress status.

My Project

I have written the Game Programming from the Texas TEKS but doing it as a different spin -- I am teaching it as an introductory computer science course. It means that I am attracting a different type of student than we normally get in a computer science class and that I am having to teach many of the concepts differently than are usually taught. So far though, it's all good. I'm getting a very different set of students than I usually get in a computer science class. We won't really see the results of the class until next year -- does my PreAP / AP enrollment go up? Do we see a higher number of students take Computer Science in College? Do our overall grades in other classes improve?

My goal is to change the world.

I want to make computer science more accessible to more people. The only way to do that is to make the courses more attractive to students as the only way they are going to take the class, is if they think it is something they want to do.
