Games Make Good Incentives for Students with Disabilities!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a resource specialist teacher. Which means I teach students with special needs that are placed in the general ed setting. My students typically have some type of learning disability which causes them to struggle with learning compared to their peers.

I pull out students from their general ed classroom for a specific amount of time to work on specific goals to help close the gap to their learning.

I also push into the general ed classroom to provide support as necessary. I have multiple grade levels that work with me from 2nd to 5th grade. They are hard-working kids, that truly want to learn. They are the best students a teacher could have!

My Project

My students have learning disabilities. They require incentives in order to produce work. Based on principals of applied behavioral analysis, reinforcement has been used to effectively increase and strengthen a variety of behaviors and skills. Reinforcement is used to teach target skills and increase desired behaviors which include following directions, completing a non-preferred task or simply sitting in your seat.

Games such as Simon, Legos or Connect 4 are highly motivating and will promote student engagement in academics.

As students work in my classroom, they work for tokens which eventually earn them a break. The games that are in this project will help students stay focused and excited about learning, because the end result ends with an engaging fun game for them to play. Games like these will promote student achievement across all academic areas.
