My Students

My students are high school seniors who are simultaneously excited for and terrified by the prospect of college. In order to help them prepare for the academic demands of college, I have placed heavy reading and writing requirements in our A.P. Literature & Composition class, with a focus on diversity.

My students are the definition of survivors.

They have grown up in some of the toughest neighborhoods in NYC. They fight the norm that surrounds them by deciding to stay in school and better themselves - both academically and emotionally. This group of students has made it to their senior year of high school - a milestone that too many of their friends, family, and former classmates have not yet been able to achieve.

The seniors have big plans for college and want to go on to become nurses, doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, and writers. They have only one short year until they will have to navigate the world outside of the school that many of them have known since sixth grade. I want to ensure that they are all given the resources necessary for them to transition from high school to college and beyond.

My Project

My students need a break from technology. After spending the past year and a half glued to their computers and Zoom, they are asking for ways to interact with each other again. Therefore, they have asked me to help arrange after school game nights and field trips to the park, where they can play Chess, Trouble, Sorry etc. They are also hoping to be able to use the games during their lunch period.

The goal for these games is to help my students get to be kids again.

They have been through so much since the start of the pandemic and just want a chance to play and and laugh and enjoy being young.

I am hoping that these games will help build community and encourage my students to put their phones down for a few hours.
