My Students

Was reading always fun or easy for you? My first graders are just learning to read. They are learning their alphabet, sounds, and how to read the sounds together. Many of my students find reading difficult and challenging.

My students are primarily English Language Learners.

Most have recently immigrated to America with no English language background. Their parents want to support them but don't know the language either. In first grade, they have to learn the alphabet, the sounds and how to put sounds together to read and write. It's a lot to learn in a limited period of time. The students that do not know how to read usually feel inferior and tend to give up more easily. They begin to grow demons in their mind that say, “I can’t do this!” When they begin the school year with that mantra, it sets them up for failure. If I can expel those feelings early, it gives them a more likely opportunity to succeed.

My Project

The phonics games will be used to supplement and reinforce the word study lessons taught in class. During enrichment time, I would like to set up literacy centers that include the phonics games Fishing for Phonics, Sound Bingo, Send a Sound, Write and Wipe Cards, Magic Boards and Magnetic Alphabets Centers. These games are a fun and interactive way for students to remember what was taught that week. In Fishing for Phonics, students will use magnetic poles to fish for beginning letters that match a picture card. Students will be able to manipulate letters to create words with the magnetic alphabets, practice writing parts of words with the write and wipe cards, play a whole class game of bingo and practice drawing pictures to match letters with the magic boards.

I love teaching first grade.

I see kids start the year with no English language and not being able to identify a letter. By the end of the year, they are hooked on books. The progress is amazing! The requested phonics games will do more to support their growth and love for reading. The games especially work for those who are not as motivated to read. The games put a fun spin on reading and encourage the kids to read without them knowing it.
