This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's your first day of kindergarten! Your first real school experience! You are excited, nervous, and everything in between. It is time to meet your teacher, make new fiends, and learn how to be social without your mom standing next to you. This is the independence that my students strive for everyday.

More than half of the students in my kindergarten classroom are English Language Learners.

They attend an Illinois Public School and come from low income homes. My students are very hard-working and love learning, especially through hands-on activities and games. When coming to school for the first time, the students are very shy and are reluctant to speak and socialize with their peers. They lack the oral language skills that are needed in order to be successful in classroom. My students need more opportunities and materials to develop their oral language skills throughout the school year.

My Project

The early language folder games that I am requesting will be a great tool to use with the students during their center time. I know that these language games will act as "ice-breakers" and get the students talking more, especially in the beginning of the school year. My Spanish- speaking students are very cautious with their English and more classroom materials are needed in order to give these students more confidence in speaking English. All of my students need to be able to interact with others in both the school setting and in the outside world. Through game play, I feel that the students will learn about turn-taking and learn how to work cooperatively with their classmates. Though these may be things that we take for granted, primary grade children need to be taught these things. The early language folder games provided students with hands-on activities and opportunities to develop and build their oral language.

By supporting my project, I am confident that the materials I am requesting will be both engaging and beneficial for my students.

All children like to play games, and what better way to incorporate learning at the same time! Using these materials during center time will enhance my students oral language skills, which is something that schools do not spend enough time on or have the proper materials for. I want my students to leave kindergarten with confidence that their voice can be heard!
