Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a group of 34 fifth graders who come from a variety of different backgrounds. About half of my class are English language learners and have made huge improvements in their English skills. They are all eager to learn and enjoy coming to school every day. My school is located in a mixed economic area in Sacramento. Many of my students are being raised by single mothers or fathers and have limited access to materials after school is out.
We are working hard on establishing a growth mindset with our students so they know they can accomplish anything they put their minds to.
My Project
One of the best ways to engage students is through play. Even though my students are 10 and 11 years old, they still enjoy a good board game or two. With this assortment of games, my students can be playing something different each unit we work on. The reading comprehension game set will come in handy while I am working with small groups. I plan on having the students play some of these games with a partner while I am meeting with small groups. The English Language Learner bundle of games will help my students from other countries help to learn the language properly.
The multiplication and division games will be used as a math fact rotation daily during my small group time.
Games like Jenga will encourage students to learn their facts quickly before they move on to junior high. The multiplication pens and cards will also allow students to test themselves on the facts they may already know or need to continue working on. The math folder games will also work nicely during my small group time as they are easy for the students enough to work independently with. Thank you for your support!
