My students need new board games for center time. Learning by playing is a great way to instill a love of learning in young children.
I have 27 first graders who love to read in English and Spanish.
In our school, 54% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They enjoy participating in literacy activities, and they are eager writers and readers.
My Project
My students will play math games such as Addition, Subtraction and Time Bingo in small groups. They will also use the "Target the Standards Reading Games" for individual work or partner play. These games provide hands-on practice with critical first-grade reading and language standards. From building words using blends and digraphs, to analyzing text features for key facts and information, each self-contained game helps children to practice the skills that they need to excel as strong readers.
Since I teach a bilingual class, I will also use games such as bilingual Zingo so they can continue to learn Spanish as they play.
When students play math games, they revisit previously learned concepts and practice skills that they have encountered earlier.
When kids are having fun, they are more open to learning and they take advantage of the concepts and skills that they learned as they adapt and build on them.
