My students need games and puzzles desperately! Over the years I have provided these things but as I begin to set up my classroom I realize that the deficit is too much for my budget.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My work as a teacher has always been with young children who are from low income and immigrant families. I worked as a Head Start teacher for 15 years and loved it. For a small change, I transferred to teach Kindergarten in a primary school ( grades K-2). This school's enrollment is almost exclusively the lowest income kids/families in our county. It has been a wonderful change and a good fit for me as an experienced teacher.

As said, my school's community is made of a very low income often immigrant families.

I have always supplemented the classroom from my own income. I have, however, noticed two very clear needs for these children and I cannot fund it alone.

My Project

I am setting up my Kindergarten classroom and I realize my students do not have any complete puzzles or games. Children who are learning to read and count must have a complete game or puzzle to make the learning effective. These children do not have the opportunity to play with learning games or puzzles at home.

The bingo set, the sight word puzzles, the fishing game, the pop addition games, math counters and the floor puzzles (children love these!) will be used in our daily literacy and math learning centers.

For example, children love to play bingo- we sing each time someone gets "bingo" and make sure everyone gets a turn to pretend that they are the teacher and be the caller.

Kindergarten children spend a large portion of their day working in these learning centers. That is why it is so important to have these resources be a complete, engaging, and easy to use. Providing the games and puzzles will allow my students to learn to work cooperatively with one another, as well as, learn the very important skill of working independently.

The items I have chosen will enrich my students day by teaching essential skills while still allowing these very young children to learn through play.
