Games and Imagination: Creating Classroom Community

My Project

The year kids learned through computer screens was one of the most challenging times we’ve faced in education. Kids who didn’t have access to books at home could no longer take part in the great adventures that happen between the pages of a book. One of the goals I have in my classroom is to reignite a love for reading real books. I set aside time twice a week for my students to find a book that engages their imagination, and we read together. It is the communal experience of sharing a space to read together that feels so special and sacred, especially in the years after COVID-19. That is why I have placed novels on my list of items for the classroom.

I also want to get students engaging with each other outside of their screens.

So many of them have become dependent on a screen for communication, which is why I like to include games in the classroom. Educational games provide opportunities for classroom bonding and healthy competition. When students know they’ll have fun in the classroom, they are far more willing to come ready to learn. Games are one of my favorite ways to engage my students in the lesson.

Everything I’ve included on the list is there because I know it will contribute to our class community. Group reading time creates a safe space for students to jump into their imaginations, and classroom games allow students to interact face to face and have fun with their peers.
