My Students
Our school is an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn, that is becoming the city's first Harbor and Maritime themed middle school. I teach English as a New Language to all grades and a Harbor Studies elective class to grades K through 3.
With our transition to a Harbor Middle School, we have a great opportunity to revitalize a school community that has struggled for equity and success over the years.
The students know me as "Captain Jack" and we're learning about all things related to the harbor, including marine biology, boats, navigation, weather, and much more!
My Project
I teach English as a New Language and an elective on New York Harbor to students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Right now we're learning phonics in one class and marine biology in the other, and the curiosity level is through the roof!
My students learn much much more when class is fun.
They have very real learning needs and they will absolutely LOVE using this buzzer system to improve their command of the English language and explore the world of maritime studies. I already inhabit the teacher persona of "Captain Jack" and with your support I'm excited to add "Game-Show Host" to my teaching repertoire!
