Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When I hear the students I work with tell me, "I can't read" or "I don't like math" it motivates me to make learning as stress-free and exciting as possible. I work with students that are in the bottom 25th percentile of their grade level, and many times they have low self-esteem or very little experience with the English language. These are usually the students who sit quietly in their classroom, praying the teacher won't call on them. I only have 30-45 minutes to help each of my student groups close the gap and catch up with their peers, so every minute counts!
My goal is to build each child's self-esteem, instilling the love for learning, and catch them up to their peers as quickly as possible.
I hope to do this through the addition of more hands-on games and flexible seating in my classroom. When students walk into my classroom for the first time, I see their eyes light up as they get excited to "play" not knowing every game they play is solidifying a reading or math skill they didn't think they could learn. It is so rewarding to see them come out of their shell and learn in an interactive way when they scoot next to a friend on their fun seating to interact and get excited about learning. The best part is when it's time to clean up and the students say, "I had so much fun today," or "I can't wait to come back tomorrow." This is what teaching is all about!
