Game On! Connecting Technology Curriculum to Esports

My Project
At the beginning of the year, I do an activity where I have students raise their hands if they recognize someone I put on the board. You'd be amazed at how many students don't recognize historical figures like Sally Ride, FDR, or even our current vice president! You know who they do know though? All the gaming streamers I put up. It's clear that gaming is a huge interest for our students. It's important to meet them where their interests lie and utilize it to conenct to our required curriculum.
In Technology class, we focus a lot of our efforts on design through 3D printing and laser cutting.
This is something that students enjoy doing but I'd love to connect it to gaming! With our new graphics card, computer monitors, Xbox Controller and Switch game, I want to give students an opportunity to explore different games and research what it is that makes a game enjoyable. They'll explore styles, characters, goals, and much more. They'll then use these ideas to plan out their own video games. We'll connect it to our curriculum by having them design a level and laser cut it on the Baltic Birch plywood. They'll also design a 3D model of their character and 3D print it using the PLA filament being requested. We'll then explore different options for students to begin to design their own games so that it's something that continue to be explored further. This is a project that I'm so excited about and look forward to bringing to fruition. Let's let all students feel like winners no matter what place they come in!
