Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consists of children from a low socioeconomic background. They are lovely, motivated and respectful children that are enthusiastic about learning. Specifically, I teach Social Studies to students from grades K-5. Since I am the only Social Studies teacher in the school, I frequently do not get to teach every class in the school. Our school has a population of over 750 students.

Engaging my students through my pedagogy is my main goal.

I notice that many of my students love art and doing art related activities, so try my best to incorporate art into my Social Studies lessons whenever possible.

My Project

My students need supplies to continue doing cooperative learning and culminating activities. I frequently do gallery walk, jigsaw and culminating activities, which require that each group has markers, twistables, chart paper, task sheet, pencils, etc. My students love these type of activities. Student work in groups to complete tasks learn from each other and present to the class. These are all standards that students are supposed to be able to do in third through fifth grade.

My students frequently engage in analyzing images that I display strategically around the room.

Students are assigned a group and they are given a sheet with questions to answer as they visit each image. The problem is that they do not have clip boards to write on or post its to leave their wonderings or questions as they visit each image or station.

I also have my students do cooperative working activities, in which they need to gather information and present to the class the information that they have gathered. Students in each group are given chart paper, a task sheet, twistables colored crayons and/or crayons, pens, pencils, markers and information that is printed out for them to read and analyze. The problem is that I have almost no markers left and my copy paper is almost gone. At this point, when I run out completely I will be purchasing from my own money.

Lastly, my students are going to be creating a book based on their case study of the Inuits. The book is going to be made from card stock. Unfortunately, my school has none in the building. Cardstocks is also great for poster making.
