My students need metallic pencils and markers, black paper, and rulers to create project in both one and two point perspective.

My Students
I remember learning how to draw using perspective when I was in Junior High. It was exciting to learn this technique that allowed me to draw more realistically; it increased my confidence in my own artistic ability. My students need this confidence in their ability before they go to Middle School.
My students are bright, funny, and eager to learn new things.
Like most students in 3rd and 4th grade, they love shiny things, and are very motivated by new and interesting materials. My school is a neighborhood school with 50+ years of history. I often teach the children, grandchildren and extended family of former students to our school. We have a population of English Language Learners, as well as a mix of students from various economic backgrounds. Their wide variety of experiences bring challenges and a lot of interest to our class discussions and projects. It is very important in upper elementary art classes that students learn to include their own thoughts and ideas into their artwork. I strive to provide a variety of new and motivating tools and materials because many of my students have limited art materials at home.
My Project
My students will use the metallic pencils and markers, the rulers and the black paper to learn how to draw in both one and two point perspective. Both are required in my district's scope and sequence, and both can be a challenge to teach. Imagine, learning to draw in a way you never have before, with rules about where to draw what line, and where an angle must connect. The metallic pencils and markers on the black paper will provide some interest and excitement to a drawing technique that is challenging to learn. It will add variety to the projects that I plan, allowing us to learn how to draw 3-D forms (including both geometric forms, and block letters, as well as nighttime cities. This will both help my students connect some of their math skills with their artwork, and it will expose them to the variety of projects that having a knowledge of perspective will allow them to enjoy.
This project is "Empowering Students Through Art" by helping them to see mathematical connections between shapes, forms, lines and angles to their artwork.
My students will learn that no learning happens on an island- we connect our math and reading skills to our everyday lives. A great work of art is one that makes both the artist and the viewer connect experiences. These tools will motivate my students to challenge themselves to achieve higher drawing skills, and apply their previous learning.
