My Students
"Children's games are hardly games. Children are never more serious than when they play," said Montaigne. I whole heartedly agree but take it one step further by adding that children who learn by playing games at school learn not only math concepts but also social and communication skills.
There are 19 boys and girls in my first grade class in Alaska, 10 are girls and 9 are boys.
3 of those students receive Special Education services and 1 of those has severe needs because she can neither walk nor talk. This is a group of sweet, noisy, smart, outgoing, energetic, challenging, talkative 6- and 7-year-olds. Playing games is already a big part of our math and reading curricula, and they love playing games to learn! Our elementary school is K-6 and located in a nice community in our city. Our school is pretty diverse and has very hard working teachers, supportive parents and a principal who does his best to make sure we have good technology to meet our needs and goals as teachers and learners.
My Project
A variety of math games is what I'm requesting and what my students will LOVE to play with over and over and over AND learn at the same time! When I was in 1st grade I wanted to grow up and make games, which is what I've done in the capacity of a primary teacher. I took a class from a fantastic teacher in my district and it inspired me to make lots of math games. I also started buying games since I didn't always have the time or resources to make the games I wanted. Now I use my games throughout the year, but find that I need a few more games to fill in the holes with a few specific math concepts (time, money, place value). We play math games every Friday and they are always available at the "Math Station" every day.
These games will be used so many times during the school year, and will be used year after year.
1st grade is a crucial grade for building a strong base in basic math skills...so what better way to do that and and foster a LOVE of learning than by using games?
