My Students

"When will I EVER need this?" It's okay to admit that you probably asked that question as a student. Today's fifth graders are no different. Using Fuzzy Mud in an integrated unit of reading, writing, science, and character education, I hope each child can answer that question with, "Every day."

My students are the picture of America.

They come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles. Unfortunately, most also come with great needs financially and academically. With several receiving free and reduced price lunches and academic accommodations for learning differences, working together is a major component of our daily school life. Each child brings their own strengths, and weaknesses to our class, and we are all better for the diversity. Every student wants to feel safe and successful. We work hard to create an environment where everyone feels like a key contributor. My students are curious, humorous, and zealous. They enjoy learning with their eyes, ears, and hands. As a classroom family, students work together, learn from each other, and strive for personal goals of personal best.

My Project

"What if?" That's another question students often hesitate to admit they ask. During our novel study of Louis Sachar's Fuzzy Mud, my fifth graders will also explore many areas of science including biology, environmental science, and human impact. From the safety of an on-looker's point of view, each child will be encouraged to explore the characters' choices and ask those "What if?" questions. This cohesive unit of integrated subject areas will culminate in a student created project based on how humans interact with Earth's natural resources.

Learning is based on noticing patterns and making connections.

It's great to read a book, but when that book leads you on the path to other real-world experiences, the gain is exponential. Thank you for considering putting a valuable book in the hands of young people who will one day lead this world. Knowing that kindness, hard questions, and determination can create a brighter future, perhaps these students will be even more equipped to lead it well.
