Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite some students having to face challenges at home, I have explained to my students that this is a safe heaven where they can come to learn and develop life saving skills and friendships. All students are encouraged to begin their day with a warm smile and a positive attitude before we get our day started. I greet each student with a fist bump and with a cheerful, "Good Morning!" If a student isn't ready to acknowledge me, he/she gets sent back to the line to reflect on the importance of coming in ready for a new adventure.

I teach at a Title One school in Las Vegas where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and supper.

Despite some challenges and hardships, my students are eager to begin their day to learn and try their best. They want to be recognized as individuals and that school is key to have an opportunity so that they can be the first to attend college and/or trade school and be prepared to a better future.

My Project

I have seen a difference in students who are exposed to different types of literature and how at times, they lack the background to further learn to make real life connections. By having these graphic books, students will be introduced to the pleasure of comics and how they too, can become authors of their own books.

With these books, my students will be introduced to the enjoyment of comics while supporting me with effective teaching tools to promote visual literacy.

I can't wait for students who are eager to learn to get motivated and teach others by inspiring them to read as well. They will see how much enjoyment they can have and that they are learning at the same time. Many students enjoy creating stories and are often lacking the skills to develop their stories. These books will give them the confidence to write and truly enjoy it.
