This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher in a high need community. Our school is located in an area that is high in crime. For example gang, shooting, and drug activities. Some of my students have even witnessed a family member being shot and killed on the street. They are at risk every day. It is very hard for them to come to class and concentrate on what is being taught. A big part of the problem is that their families are challenged socially and economically. We have a high immigrant ratio, and most families speak Spanish at home.
My students have shown a huge interest in the subject of science. They become engaged in discussion of various topics and are very inquisitive. As we all know, all a good student needs is an opportunity to perform and excel. This interest will help them excel in other academic areas as well. Our school does not have the funding to provide the equipment to demonstrate examples of scientific study that they can touch and create.
My students' next unit in science is life science. Having 6 microscopes for group activities and a set of 25 slides will give my students the opportunity to experience first hand the wonderful world of science. The hands on experience will be more fulfilling to the students than just reading from a book. They will remember the material better if they perform experiments themselves. While reading lessons they are students, while performing experiments they are scientists.
You as a donor have a chance to help make a difference in a students' life. This may be the one opportunity that will change a good student into a great scientist. You will pull their attention from their external realty and draw it into their future possibility.
