This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a second grade teacher at a Title I inner city public school that is a part of a low income/high poverty school district. A full 100% of the students at my school are economically disadvantaged. My class includes 32 diverse students whose learning styles and abilities vary greatly. It is a challenge to find resources within a financially struggling school district to ensure positive, academic development for all of my students.
Attending school in an underfunded school district combined with living in poverty increases obstacles to learning for my students.
These circumstances are beyond their control. Despite their struggles, they come to school every day excited to be there and ready to learn. They are all creative and curious, and they demonstrate persistence regularly. Seeing them work so hard each day motivates me to seek out the best opportunities for them to achieve academic success.
My Project
My students need materials to help make Science engaging and meaningful for them. The materials my students need are books, STEM Journals, and supplies that will allow them to partake in hands on Science activities. The books about the Earth will support our study of Earth Materials. We will be able to read the books together as a class, and the students will also be able to independently read these books. These books will deepen their understanding of what will be learning in Science as well as give them a better understanding of the importance of taking care of our Earth and what they can do to help. The Rocks and Soil Activity Tub will provide the students with opportunities to investigate rocks and soil in depth.
These materials will also give my students the opportunity to participate in STEM actives which will help them build problem solving skills, instill creativity and learn to work with each other in a positive, productive way.
Each student will receive their own individual STEM journal where they will be able to track their progress of their STEM projects. The lego kits will be a resource for students to use to participate in STEM challenges to build things and conduct experiments.
