Future scientists are working to fight water crisis
My students need to make a difference by traveling to Tanzania. They will prepare with a class set of texts and a new book for the library that focus on Tanzania.

My Students
As a former scientist, who teaches predominantly African-American and Latino students, I am committed to making science come alive for my students and helping them realize that science indeed offers an exciting alternative career path.
Although I work within a high risk community, I know what my students are capable of.
I have created a unit that focuses on the water crisis in Tanzania, and I would like to see a group of students make a difference in that country after learning all about it. Engaging students in co-inquiry and experiential learning deepens their understanding of the sciences and fosters a love of science that will hopefully follow them throughout their lives.
During my graduate school training, it was disheartening to see so few underrepresented minority students and scientists. In the next decade, I would like to see those demographics change. I would like to see some of my students added to the science pipeline. Often times, science is looked upon as a boring subject because the students are not actively engaged in the inquiry process. This will not be the case with this group of students!
My Project
This 10 day tour of Tanzania and the resource books will provide students with the experience of giving back to a community while using what they have learned in a STEM setting. Students will work directly in a community in Tanzania that has suffered from the water crisis. Students will work together as part of an after school program where they will dive into all aspects of Tanzania. The more they understand about the culture they are going to work within, the more effective their presence will be.
Every child deserves the opportunity to be exposed to science in a way that is engaging and leaves them anxious to learn more!
This type of trip has long been out of the question because of my students financial situation, but with your help, we can close the gap on the types of educational experiences students are given access to. Thank you for believing in my students, and allowing them to give back in such a positive way.
