Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are frequently asking me questions about the world around us and we could turn those questions into experiments and exploration; creating the future generation of scientists and historians.
My students attend a K-8 school in a rural part of town.
The majority of the population is Hispanic, so most of my students are English Language Learners. About 95% of my students eat the federally funded lunch. They are extremely bright, but with lack of supplies or funding, my students do not always get the same opportunities as students in other districts. My students are eager to learn. Our school is an active part of the community, creating a family environment within our halls.
My Project
Arizona has adopted the Common Core Career and College Readiness Standards which integrates science and social studies with English language arts. Students are expected to learn their science and social studies content and utilize their learned knowledge to write summaries, stories, and retell what they've read. The books will provide students nonfiction text to read and write about at their level, which will keep them interested and challenged. Students will be able to read biographies that show them the diverse people and variety of careers that are available to them. The form and motion library will engage students in higher level science concepts with vocabulary they can understand. The journal, daily activities, and mapping workbooks, will allow for science and social studies to be easily accessible in their daily learning and reinforce review of the new concepts. The landforms and mapping resource box will enhance their study of geography by allowing them to become the explorers.
Finding nonfiction text at their different reading levels is extremely difficult.
The students will feel like the experts when the challenging information is given to them at their level and they are able to retell the information to their peers and families. They won't just be reading about scientists and historians, they will jump into the roles of scientists and historians encouraging their interests for future college education goals and careers.
